Competency Exam Information

laptopThe Building Sciences Program is one of App State’s most popular programs. It houses the Architectural Technology and Design (ATD) and Construction Management (CM) majors.

Admission to the Building Sciences (BSC) Program

To declare a BSC major, students must be admitted into the BSC program. To be admitted, students must:
Pass the competency exam with a score of 90 or higher, while those scoring below 90 may be considered for admission depending on resource availability. Students are permitted to take the competency exam only once.
Earn a minimum grade of “C” (2.0) in BSC 1110, BSC 1210, and BSC 1310. Those who earn below a “C” may be allowed to repeat each course once.
Complete (or have transfer credit for) at least 30 cumulative semester hours, have earned credit for R C 1000 (Introduction to Writing and Inquiry) or an equivalent course, and have earned credit for or current enrollment in UCO 1200 (First Year Seminar) or an equivalent course.

BSC 1015 – Competency Exam

BSC 1015 – Competency Exam is a zero-credit course offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. The course is designed to administer the Building Sciences competency exam. The competency exam evaluates student knowledge and skills in the following courses:
BSC 1110 – Construction Methods
BSC 1210 – Architectural Graphics
BSC 1310 – M&S I: Construction Materials

Registration Eligibility

Students may register for BSC 1015 after completing, or while concurrently enrolled in, all three required courses listed above. Prerequisite/Corequisite: BSC 1110, BSC 1210, and BSC 1310.

Course and Grading Information

  • Zero-credit course
  • Graded on an S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) basis
  • The competency exam may only be taken once
  • No regular class meetings are required for BSC 1015


Exam Information

  • Study guides will be available at the beginning of the semester through the BSC 1015 Canvas site.
  • The exam will be administered in person during final examination week and completed online using a laptop computer. Students are required to bring their own laptop to the exam.
  • Additional details regarding the exam date, time, and location will be provided through Canvas.

** Transfer students who successfully complete the requirements of one of our BSC articulation agreements will have the Competency Exam requirement waived.
