Electric Grid Class Students Tour New River Light & Power Facilities

On Thursday,  November 11, 2022, the Electric Grid class taught by Dr. Sohad Abu-Elzait toured the New River Light and Power facilities in Boone. The students toured the main power distribution substation that feeds Appalachian State University's campus, the control rooms, the external padmount switches, the main transmission pole, and more. The tour is part of the curriculum that enhances the student's understanding of the topics studied in class.

This unique class is now offered at the Sustainable Technology program. It aims to introduce students to the electric grid components and operation since most renewable energy generation systems are grid-connected. Getting students out into the field is an important goal in our department.
