The BSC 3535 ASC Competition class took a field trip on Friday October 25 th to Charlotte and Statesville , NC to visit sites that are similar to this years Associated Schools of Construction Student Competition. Appalachian State University’s Building Science program will be sending two teams to this years competition, Concrete and Design Build. The field trip gave the students the chance to engage with industry professionals and ask questions that may benefit them in their upcoming competition. Lithko Contracting, this year’s sponsor, hosted the class at Lithko’s project at 2125 N Davidson, Charlotte, NC. A $132.9 million dollar 389 unit multi family project with Swinerton as the general contractor. The students observed 3 stories of cast in place concrete structure similar to this years competition. The students were able to engage with these companies discussing poured in place concrete means and methods, scheduling and project logistics.
The second site AM King Group hosted the class at Cheney Brothers, Inc. warehouse and distribution facility at Statesville, NC. Cheney Brothers, Inc is a wholesale food distributor with locations throughout the southeast. This year’s Design Build Competition tasks the students to design, estimate, plan and schedule a similar refrigerated warehouse and distribution facility in Laredo, TX. Being a unique building type, this visit was invaluable to the class allowing them to observe various temperature ranges of colds storage down to subzero, warehouse operations, and critical aspects that will influence their design. A big thank you goes out to Lithko, Swinerton, AM King, and Cheney Brothers, Inc. for allowing the students this wonderful opportunity.
