The New Energy Landscape: Trends Facilitating Microgrids & Future Directions

This talk will focus on trends within the energy field, work being done in the area of microgrids, and the future of microgrid technology. Pfleger will discuss current technologies and emerging innovations in microgrids from his perspective within Schneider Electric, a multinational company operating in over 100 countries worldwide that is a global leader in power management and automation systems. In addition, Pfleger, who earned his MS in Technology degree at Appalachian in 2014, will discuss his career advice for students in the fields of sustainable energy and energy efficiency. The session will include a question and answer period.

Bill Pfleger is part of the Schneider Electric North American Microgrid Competency Center where he currently serves as the team’s Solutions Architect Manager focused on microgrids and distributed energy resources projects spanning from the customer side of the meter to the utility control center. He is also in charge of leading the Microgrid Competency Center’s Proposal Team and assists in general business development and marketing activities. Prior to his current role with Schneider Electric, Bill worked as a Business Development and Marketing Specialist, Proposal Manager, Tender Manager, and Solutions Architect. Bill holds master’s degrees in Appropriate Technology, Building Science, and General Experimental Psychology, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, all from Appalachian State University. Prior to joining Schneider Electric’s Microgrid team, Bill served as an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University and worked as a design engineer, project manager, project estimator, and as an assistant manager of the Drafting and Design team for Mid-South Engineering, a company focused on the wood products manufacturing and cogeneration / combined heat and power fields.
